The two most important reasons why governments regulate trade include: (i) protection of citizens against harmful products entering their borders and protection of resources and (ii) protection of local economy, not allowing foreign competitors free access to export into the market with no duties, no regulation. Local trade might be harmed through having to compete with uncompetitive pricing.
The various national and international measures that regulate trade are discussed, explaining the basis for regulation and enforcement. These measures include national as well as international regulations.
