Multimodal transportation concerns a variety of modes used in combination so that the respective advantages of each mode are maximized. In this module different aspects of ocean, road and rail transport are explored, with the emphasis on ocean transport.
Present-day demand for freighting of goods is influenced by integrated transportation systems that require flexibility in the respective use of each mode. As a result, modal competition exists at various degrees and takes several dimensions. Modes can compete or complement one another in terms of cost, speed, accessibility, etc. There are three main conditions that ensure that some modes are complementing one another and they are (i) different geographical markets that interconnects, e.g. landlocked countries (ii) different transport markets such as rail and road and (iii) levels of service, i.e. cost versus time.
Your understanding of each mode will assist in making informed decisions as to the combined use of modes to maximize flexibility, cost, speed and relevant applicable factors depending on customers and requirements.
